Working with Trauma, Neurodivergence, and LGBTQIA+ clients in the denver area

I’m Shelby Nolan, a licensed professional counselor.

I'm queer, neurodivergent, and no stranger to therapy, anxiety, burnout, or trauma. But I have been able to find the things I needed in the situations I didn’t deserve, and I want to help you do the same. The lens I work through is one of challenge layered on a foundation of support and strong rapport. I’ll push you and have your back the whole time.

SPECIALTIES

Trauma

Trauma is what was too much or too little, too fast, too intense, or without enough support. It can be acute or chronic, straightforward or complex. Regardless, we can address it together.

Neurodivergence

There’s a ton of diagnoses under this umbrella. Let’s explore what you’re experiencing and what could help you. We can work with your brain instead of shaming it for differences.

Therapy for Therapists

This is an incredible field to work in for so many reasons, and there’s also so little direct education for us as to how to balance the intensity of our work with trying to have a life and just be a regular person. Your role as a therapist is within your whole, but it’s only a single Part. Let’s explore that Part while we create more space for the whole Person that you are. I have a particular emphasis on helping Neurodivergent therapists be more aware of their needs and more capable of meeting those needs by exp

Identity work

LGBTQIA+, racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, polyamory, etc. We can explore what makes you YOU. What identities have you chosen vs which were imposed upon you? Which ones would you like to keep or explore? Let’s reintroduce you to you and you to whoever who choose to include.

Therapy for Lifters

Lifting is an incredible way to challenge our minds, bodies, and spirits. However, it’s also a form of self-care that can also have unwanted impacts on our self-esteem, body image, and relationship with food. Strength training has gotten more popular in recent years, particularly with women/femme folks, and yet it’s still with an emphasis on diet culture and aesthetics. If you’d like to learn how to explore lifting through the lenses of performance, holistic wellbeing, and actual care for your Self, let’s talk about it.

Communication

Relationships are difficult. Whether your communication in romantic relationships, friendships, family dynamics, or work dynamics feel as though it’s not getting you what you want or need, we can address any and all of those. Maybe it’s your communication with yourself that feels off. We can learn more effective ways to use language to connect with others.

“Shelby is the kind of therapist who is going to treat you more like a person than a client - that you are both cared for and capable.”

— Jeff H. (colleague, not a client)

Grief

No matter the original topic of our work together, we will reach the point of grief. There is loss in both the experiences we did and didn’t have, and I’ll ride those waves with you.

Challenge

My style isn’t soft and sweet, which doesn’t mean I’m not kind. Conflict is a part of treatment. I will push you toward your own goals, and I welcome you to push back, disagree, and challenge me in return. There is growth in finding our edges and being able to communicate them in a safe environment.

Sense
of
Self

In my work, I bring myself into the room so you can too. I’m stubborn, silly, and love language. I hope to learn more about who you are, too.
